Job Objective:

The Director of Clinical Informatics is responsible for the operations management and service expansion of Clinical Informatics Services including development, implementation and evaluation of clinical informatics and clinical information systems in alignment with the Information Technology strategic direction.  Additionally, they are responsible for all aspects of the clinical information systems operations including team building, service delivery, fiscal administration, allocation of human resources, staff development, continuous quality improvement, employee satisfaction, and accomplishing departmental goals and objectives.  Provides development and administrative direction for information technology core and peripheral application systems including, but not limited to McKesson Core Clinical systems (HED, HMM, HEO, HSM, HARX, HCO, etc) The Director of Clinical Informatics will be responsible for working with the VP of Education/Informatics, the CIO and IS Management in the development and maintenance of all information technology systems and services to ensure system performance, data integrity, security/confidentiality, accessibility, employee and patient satisfaction.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Guides the development, implementation, support, maintenance and enhancements of the clinical information system, the simulation training lab and the clinical learning management system
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities in the clinical informatics division for end user support and training
  • Oversees implementation and integration activities required by the system such as:
  1. Understands the scope of the project for clinical informatics and directs the team members to meet the goals and deadlines associated with this scope
  2. In coordination with ITSG, selects, implements, manages supports, coordinates and plans the development of the electronic medical record.
  3. Coordinates resources and ensures that decisions are made by the appropriate people
  • Acts as a liaison between nursing, physicians, support services and technology regarding the electronic medical record in order to ensure a safer, more efficient system that will enhance patient care delivery.
  • Builds relationships and improves communication flow through participation in unit- or hospital-based committees
  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates patient care processes in an efficient, organized manner that results in high levels of quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Formulates and maintains a professional working relationship with the entire health care team, patients, family members and visitors.
  • Responsible for Performance evaluations for all staff on an annual basis
  • Responsible for verification of payroll
  • Interview/employ and train staff
  • Oversees the departmental budget and evaluates routine expenditures
  • Integrates the clinical information system into existing policies and procedures.  Directs the development of new policies/procedures as appropriate
  • Prepares operational and management status reports as appropriate
  • In conjunction with the ITSG Directors, is responsible for managing the change process for the organization

  • Knowledge, skill and ability to coordinate with all clinical areas to ensure the strategic view of project plans for organization wide clinical information system projects are communicated and understood.
  • Knowledge and ability to practice as defined by California Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and ANA Code of Ethic in coordination with hospital policy and procedure.

Experience and Abilities:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience as an RN in acute care setting.
  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing.
  • 7 years of progressively responsible experience in clinical management, informatics and education that includes experiences in educating and deploying the electronic health record across a large health care system. Years related experience in IT or technology services with management responsibilities
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership capabilities including management of staff, budgets and multiple functions at the manager or director level.
  • Proven project management, problem solving, critical thinking and decision making ability
