Job Description

Job Objective:

Under the direction of and reporting to the FSU Clinical Coordinator, the forensic nurse examiner conducts medical/forensic examinations on victims of assault/abuse following the CaIEMA protocol and hospital policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Perform patient evaluations
  1. Obtains medical history and history of assault per CaIEMA specifications

  2. Performs general forensic medical examination for the collection of evidence.

  3. Performs ano-genital examinations with law enforcement authorization

  4. Accurately assesses, photographs, and documents findings on CaIEMA900, 920, 923, 925, 930, 502, 602 or 950 forms following established state medical protocol

  5. Prepares, packages and seals evidentiary kit maintaining chain of evidence per law enforcement's protocol and hospital policy

  6. Provides prophylactic treatment for sexually transmitted diseases as appropriate

  7. Administers medication for pregnancy prevention with informed consent as appropriate

  1. Provides support and education to victims and support persons throughout examination

  2. Provides discharge instructions, follow-up medical care options and referrals to include Victims of Violent Crime Compensation

  3. Completes child abuse reporting form as required by California State Child Abuse Reporting Law (PC11166)

  4. Refers patients to Emergency Room for further evaluation and care as warranted

  5. Cleans and disinfects examination area per protocol.

  1. Assists in administrative and evaluative aspects of quality clinical care
  1. Performs forensic examinations per protocol

  2. Participates in peer review process

  3. Participates in departmental quality improvement.

  1. Interacts with assault patients , support persons, suspects, advocates, and other members of the investigation process in a professional manner
  1. Participate in court proceedings as a witness as required via subpoena

  2. Respond as PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) forensic examiner to local state and federal prisons when requested.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to interpersonal violence, including sexual assault

  • Thorough knowledge of the prosecution process and evidentiary collection procedures related to the forensic/medical examination of patients.

  • Thorough knowledge of forensic evidence collection, including biological, photographic and trace evidence.

  • Thorough knowledge of forensic documentation, as well as testifying as both an expert and fact witness.

  • Thorough knowledge of current federal, state and local standards for evidence collection
