Physical Therapist Neonatal/Pediatric - Physical Therapy - Full Time/Days in Lancaster, CA at Antelope Valley Hospital

Job Description

Job Objective:  Immediately responsible to the Physical Therapy Supervisor or the Director of Rehabilitation Services to carry out referrals under the general direction of the referring physician to support the Direction of Rehabilitation Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A.  Provision of Patient Care

  1. Performs Physical Therapy evaluations as ordered by a physician.
  2. Based on the evaluation, develops treatment programs with appropriate treatment objectives.
  3. Provides for the implementation of proper treatment programs.
  4. Periodically evaluates the patient’s response to treatment and alters the program as appropriate with the physician’s approval.
  5. Administers standard diagnostic or prognostic tests of neurological signs, range of motion, physical and motor development, gestational age/milestones, reflexes specific to age and feeding ability.
  6. Formulates appropriate patient discharge plan considering the patient’s level of function, resources, family needs and safety issues.
  7. Performs therapy services in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

B.  Communication

  1. Maintains appropriate patient records including the initial evaluation, daily treatment charting, progress reports and discharge summary in the patient’s medical record.
  2. Documentation on the Multidisciplinary Care Plan
  3. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing to referring physicians.
  4. Provides timely and accurate billing information specific to patient interventions provided.
  5. Maintains effective relationships with physicians, physician’s offices, other departments within the hospital, coworkers, patients and patient families and outside agencies for provision of services after discharge from the hospital.

C.  Administrative

  1. Maintains patient and employee confidentiality.
  2. Maintains adequate attendance and punctuality.       
  3. Maintains a professional appearance and good personal hygiene.
  4. Review of departmental staff meeting minutes and communications.
  5. Demonstration of proper safety practices in the clinic and on hospital units.
  6. Participation in the Performance Improvement process in the Rehabilitation Services Department as assigned. 

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Performance of housekeeping tasks in their work areas.
  • Participation in patient education and forms development.
  • Participation in continuing education for patients, hospital staff or outside customers. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the theory, techniques and practices of accepted physical therapy treatments for neonatal and pediatric populations.
  • Knowledge of the English language and possess good composition skills for the purposes of written communication.
  • Knowledge of Antelope Valley Hospital’s hospital information system (HIS).   

Skills

  • Administration of physical therapy treatments in the NICU, acute care hospital and outpatient settings
  • Accurate assessment of a patient’s progress on the basis of judgmental criteria and measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Supervision and training of non-paneled staff.
  • Training of non-medical persons to assist with a patient’s home program/management. 

Abilities

  • Communicate effectively while maintaining good working relationships with coworkers, managers, hospital staff, physicians, patients and families and outside customers.
  • Collection and interpretation of data.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • Graduation from a Commission of Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited Physical Therapy Program. 

Experience

  • Preference of 1 year neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) clinical experience.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid license as a Registered Physical Therapist issued by the Board of Medical Examiners, State of California or eligible for license.
  • American Heart Association BLS CPR certification.
  • Current CCS paneling or application of paneling within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Ability to function in NICU, clinical acute care, outpatient clinic and office settings.
