Job Description

Job Objective:

Under the direction of the Director the Laboratory Donor Center Registered Nurse provides screening, phlebotomy and post procedure care to blood donors. In addition, duties include evaluating acceptability of donors, maintaining donor records, and monitoring supplies and equipment used in the Donor Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes medical history, performs physical examination, and evaluates the acceptability of a blood donor
  • Performs phlebotomies for the purpose of obtaining blood suitable for transfusion
  • Observes the blood donor for any signs or symptoms of adverse reactions and administers appropriate care when necessary
  • Establishes a good rapport with the blood donor through interpersonal and professional communication
  • Instructs the blood donor in follow-up care
  • Maintains accurate blood donor records and assures that the unique donor identification number is attached to all items relating to the blood donor
  • Monitors supplies and equipment and keeps the work area neat and clean
  • Performs quality control procedures for the blood donor center
  • Prepares blood donor bags

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Maintains the canteen area of the Blood Donor Center
  • Makes blood donor appointments
  • Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
  • Adds support to other laboratory staff as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of basic computer operations and programs
  • Knowledge of basic practices and procedures normally acquired through a minimum of one year of nursing
  • Knowledge of safe handling of biological specimens
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in required area

Skills

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Abilities

  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures that pertain to blood donor acceptance/rejection
  • Ability to perform basic physical examination including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and hemoglobin
  • Ability to operate Hospital and Laboratory Information Systems
  • Ability to exhibit courteous, helpful and professional behavior in dealing with patients, public and peers

Education and Experience:

Education

  • College degree/course work that will satisfy the requirements for a Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California Department of Consumer

Experience

  • One year of experience in an acute care hospital or Blood Donor center is preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of a current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Possession of a current American Heart Association BLS card

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Able to perform duties in a normal hospital clinical laboratory environment and donor center
  • Job requires short periods of bending
  • Job requires handling of biological specimens
