Job Description

Job Objective:

The WIC Nutrition Assistant/LE/BPC provides nutrition counseling and breastfeeding education and support for WIC participants following California WIC Program policies and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor guidelines. The WNA/LE/BPC is responsible for enrolling, recertifying, nutrition evaluation, nutrition education, evaluating/resolving breastfeeding problems, prescribing, and issuing food instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Conducts nutrition assessment for WIC participants

  1. Evaluates height, weight, and lab values from medical form
  2. Evaluates nutrition questionnaire
  3. Evaluates and prioritizes nutrition risks

B. Nutrition education

  1. Provides nutrition counseling on Integrated Statewide Information System (ISIS) generated risks or participant choice
  2. Includes breastfeeding encouragement and support education for all pregnant participants
  3. Uses motivational interviewing techniques and involves participant in counseling
  4. Counseling is focused and time spent is appropriate
  5. Appropriate pamphlets and referral are given
  6. Facilitate/conduct group education classes
  7. Attend Agency meetings to keep current on participant education topics which includes driving to alternate clinics

C. Breastfeeding education and support

  1. Provide breastfeeding education and support by telephone, in the WIC clinics, in the hospital and as necessary in the participants' home.
  2. Provides peer counseling contacts and warmline support outside usual 8AM to 5PM working hours to WIC mothers.
  3. Follows Peer Counseling Program protocols for enrolling pregnant women, and contacting women at appropriate intervals during pregnancy and the postpartum period
  4. Be a resource person for WIC staff, doctors, nurses, and the community

D. Documentation

  1. Enters appropriate documentation into the WIC systems
  2. Appropriate HOLDS are placed for request for blood test, immunization record, medical forms, address, and income verification ,
  3. Ensure all appropriate documents are signed by the participant

E. ISIS competency

  1. Complete enrollments, recertification's, mid-certifications, trimester checks, and Disqualifications according to WIC Program guidelines
  2. Prescribe the correct food package for the participant
  3. Make the correct appointment in the correct clinic for the participant
  4. Enter all data into ISIS correctly

Non-Essential Duties

  • Maintain breastfeeding call book
  • Maintain electric pump book
  • Manage breastfeeding incentive program

Education and Experience:  Education

  • High School Diploma
  • Successful completion of Nutrition 101 or equivalent experience
  • Has breastfed a child
  • 2 years of experience as a WIC Nutrition Assistant

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • State of California WIC Program WIC Nutrition Assistant Completion of Certification
  • Lactation Educator Certificate
  • California drivers' license and current car insurance

Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand and walk for most of the day
  • Must be able to function in a noisy crowded environment
  • Must be able to lift and carry 15 pounds for short distances
  • Must be able to work schedule required by the needs of the Program
  • Must be able to wear latex gloves or equivalent
